Thanks to a savvy script by Kriss Turner, the characters all appear intelligent. I really wanted to like this movie more than I ultimately did. Sanaa Lathan and Alfre Woodard are favorite actors and the plot promised more than the usual rom-com. A successful, professional African-American woman (Sanaa Lathan) is feeling the pressure from her friends and family to be more open to new people, and to date instead of burying herself in her work.
She resists as long as she can, but then she meets a man (Simon Baker) with whom she falls in love and cannot bring herself to leave him, despite the disapproval from her parents and friends who. All that changes when she meets sexy, free-spirited Brian Kelly (Simon Baker). But when her ideal man (Blair Underwood) arrives on the scene, Kenya must decide between the relationship everyone expects and the romance no one.
The fact that Kendra comes from a very well to do Black family and has to deal with their expectations of her creates a situation in which most of the pressure and inner conflicts are hers really makes the story go. Additionally, the city of Atlanta is presented as a series of shorthand shots designed for people who either live there or have spent a lot of time visiting. Thankfully, rather than merely presenting the still-prevalent problems of racism like recent movies such as Crash, this warm-hearted romantic comedy opts for providing a solution.
